Assessment:

Assessment is usually the first appointment with the Consultant Psychiatrist. This involves discussion on current problems, the context of current problems and past history (e.g. medical, psychiatric, personal etc.). The assessment helps to identify principal symptoms and, therefore, the diagnosis. It helps to develop a robust management plan which is tailored to the person’s needs. The discussion helps to develop rapport between the psychiatrist and the individual which is called “therapeutic relationship” which has enormous value in long term management.

A detailed letter will be sent to your GP following the assessment process after you have had a copy to check that it is all correct. If you do not wish this to happen please inform Dr Ghosh during the assessment. Dr Ghosh will send a brief letter to the GP in urgent cases.

Follow up appointments:

This is the time when there is discussion about the progress, medication, important related issues and also management plans are put into place. The frequency of follow up appointments depends on the presentation of the patient, the medication chosen and the progress. This can be every two weeks if close monitoring is required. Once a stable dose of medication has been reached, reviews can take place every month or even longer.

Letters will also be sent to your GP after each follow up appointment.

Please note that your GP will need to be informed about your medication or any change to medication as s/he will continue to do the prescribing.
